Santiago Alejandro Lopez, born October 1, 1993, is the only son of Alejandro and Maribel Lopez. Santiago was born and raised in the lap of luxury of small town Lima, Ohio. His father is a highly paid and highly sought after doctor, and he gave Santiago anything he wanted without question or limits. Although clearly raised with privilege, Santiago has always talked a big game, insisting that Lima Heights Adjacent - the secure, gated community he grew up in - is really something of a ghetto hood. He was extremely commitment phobic and that, along with being a male cheerleader and struggling with his sexuality, contributed to his asshole façade.

Junior year of high school held the most change in store for Santiago. After years of struggle, he finally came to terms with his sexuality and came out as bisexual to his childhood friend, Brittany Pierce, who he had maintained a friends-with-benefits relationship with beginning freshman year and lasting through junior year. Brittany had a pregnancy scare during their junior year, and Santiago believed it was his, though Brittany had been dating Artie for several months while they carried on having sex behind his back. It later turned out to be a misunderstanding, but it wasn't long after that Santiago finally approached Brittany about a relationship, having harbored feelings for her for years. Although she chose her relationship with Artie initially, they did become a couple shortly before summer vacation, when Artie made the mistake of calling Brittany stupid.

Brittany and Santiago stayed a solid couple for all of senior year. He came out to his surprised, but supportive and accepting parents, midway through the school year. While Santiago graduated near the top of his class, as a member of the glee club, New Directions, and the cheerleading squad, the nationally ranked Cheerios, Brittany was held back with a sad 0.0 grade point average. Their relationship became too difficult to maintain when Brittany was held back, and Santiago had started having feelings for someone else. They ended things on decent terms shortly after he started attending Ohio State University at Lima to earn his Associate's Degree. He does plan to earn his Bachelor's degree, most likely at another school due to Lima's limited available programs.
